Library Director (Part-Time)

North Gorham Public Library, Gorham, ME

Position Summary

The Library Director provides leadership and day-to-day management of the library, overseeing operations, staff, programming, budget, and community relations. This part-time position is ideal for a self-motivated professional who enjoys wearing many hats in a close-knit community setting.

Hours: 12 hours/week

Reports to: Library Board of Trustees

Compensation: $20/hour

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee daily library operations, including opening/closing procedures and circulation services.
  • Manage the library’s integrated library system (ILS), catalog, and collection records.
  • Track monthly expenses, invoices, and employee hours. Prepare and deliver to the accountant. 
  • Prepare and monitor the annual budget in cooperation with the Board of Trustees.
  • Maintain accurate records, statistics, and reports for municipal and state library requirements (e.g., Maine State Library annual report).

Collection Development

  • Select, acquire, catalog, and weed materials to maintain a relevant, well-balanced collection.
  • Manage acquisitions budget and vendor relationships.
  • Evaluate community needs and adjust collection priorities accordingly.

Staff & Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a welcoming, service-oriented culture among staff.

Programming & Community Engagement

  • Plan and implement programs for patrons of all ages (Story Hour, children’s programming, adult programs, community events).
  • Build partnerships with local schools, town government, civic groups, and organizations.
  • Represent the library at community events and town meetings.

Facilities & Technology

  • Oversee basic maintenance and coordinate repairs with the town or property owner.
  • Manage computers, Wi-Fi, and other technology.
  • Maintain the library’s website and social media presence.
  • Produce a monthly newsletter.

Grants & Fundraising

  • Identify and apply for relevant grants (state, federal, private foundations).
  • Support other fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfort with basic computer systems, ILS software, office software, and social media.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25–30 lbs (moving book carts, boxes of donated materials).
  • Ability to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods.
